  10. This surveying method does not use bulky instruments on tripods,
  11. nor does it require three assistants waving flags.  It is very
  12. easy to survey surreptitiously.  Use this ability wisely.

  14. Some other surveyors are not quite so discrete.  When the
  15. government wants to take your land by eminent domain, it first
  16. sends out a team of surveyors.  You can rest assured that they
  17. won't be using any "poor man's method", either. If you ever see
  18. uninvited surveyors on your property, invite them to leave.  At
  19. gunpoint, if necessary.  Tell them to bring a court order when
  20. they return.

  22. It is much easier to stop the theft of your land before it has
  23. been measured and entered onto the government's maps.  You can't
  24. stop the surveyors permanently, but you can make them show you a
  25. court order.  This will warn you what new grandiose project you
  26. are soon to be a part of.  There are many sad stories of
  27. residents learning too little and too late that their home was a
  28. part of some new toxic waste disposal site or missile silo.
  29. Don't let it happen to you.  And you can even use your poor man's
  30. method to keep the government surveyors almost honest.

  32. If you have understood how a land description is generated from a
  33. actual survey, and how a lost line may be found from a land
  34. description, then you will notice that it is not necessary to
  35. actually survey the boundary.  Preliminary civil engineering
  36. surveys are often done from aerial photography.  It is quite
  37. simple, given the proper equipment and mentality, to conjure a
  38. land description which is not what it purports to be.  Without
  39. ever setting foot near the property.  Forewarned.

  41. When your poor man's survey is not good enuf for your purposes,
  42. then you will have to call in a professional surveyor.  Most of
  43. these folks are quite honest, and do a quick and efficient job.
  44. You should read "A Layman's Guide to Land Surveying" (see
  45. Sources, Chapter 14) before surveyor shopping.

  54. As with any bunch, there are a few shysters and quacks hiding
  55. behind a professional demeanor. You should be able to smoke out
  56. these charlatans masquerading as surveyors by doing your own
  57. preliminary survey.

  59. Any professional surveyor should agree with you to within your
  60. limit of error.  If he doesn't, then don't stop asking questions
  61. until you get a good answer.  Accept no magic.  If your
  62. "professional surveyor" insists that you are too stupid to
  63. understand what he is doing, then get a real professional.  You
  64. might even report the quack to the state surveyors' licensing
  65. board.
